There are many things we can do to help ensure that we sleep more comfortably. Follow these simple suggestions to help get the sleep you need. Roll over the hot spots for a tip.
Distractions like TVs and computers in the bedroom are known to impede sleep. Try to keep these out of the bedroom, or at the very least do not use them in the bedroom near bedtime.
Try to regulate the amount of light you are exposed to. Black out blinds and eye masks can help minimize light while you sleep.
Although some cats and dogs may like cuddling up with you in bed, they may be disruptive and interfere with your sleep. Consider placing a separate bed for your dog or cat in your bedroom, instead of sharing yours.
Use a fan to help keep your bedroom cool and as a source of "white noise" to help block out unwanted sounds.
Make sure your mattress provides enough support and isn't old or lumpy. A common misperception is that ultra-firm mattresses are better for sleep, but research indicates that a more supple mattress may be better for those with back pain.
Generally speaking, temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit and below 54 degrees will disrupt sleep. Overall, try to keep your room relatively cool. Scientists believe this can contribute to getting good sleep.
Make sure you have a comfortable pillow and consider what kind of one you sleep on. Research has shown that feather pillows hold less allergens than synthetic ones.
Stop staring at the clock. Use it only for the alarm, and turn it so it doesn't face you while you sleep.
